What actually is matcha?
Matcha is finely ground green tea from Japan. The difference from classic green tea starts with cultivation: the tea plants are shaded for several weeks before harvest, which increases the chlorophyll and amino acid content of the leaves – hence the intense green colour. After harvesting, the leaves are steamed, dried, and traditionally ground into a very fine powder on stone mills.
The big difference when drinking it: with normal tea, you steep the leaves and then throw them away. With matcha, the whole finely ground leaf is whisked with water and consumed along with it – so you’re taking in the entire leaf, not just the infusion.
Why so many people love matcha
- Caffeine meets L-theanine: Matcha contains caffeine, but also the amino acid L-theanine. This combination is said to provide a calmer, more even feeling of alertness than a quick espresso kick – without the typical afternoon slump.
- Antioxidants: Green tea – and matcha especially, because you drink the whole leaf – contains catechins, above all EGCG, among the best-known plant compounds with antioxidant effects.
- Ritual & a moment of enjoyment: In Japan, preparing matcha is part of a centuries-old tea ceremony. Even with a cup at the café, you can allow yourself that small moment of calm.
What matters to us is honesty: matcha isn’t a miracle cure, just a particularly versatile, good drink – and that’s exactly why we love serving it.
